Frequently Asked Questions
Is SMI-CA AS9100D certified for aerospace machining?
Yes. SMI CA, Inc. holds AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 certification. AS9100D is the aerospace quality management system standard required by aerospace primes and Tier 1 suppliers. All CNC machining and spring production at our Santa Fe Springs, CA facility operates under this certified QMS with full material traceability and documented process control.
What materials do you machine for aerospace and defense?
We machine aluminum alloys (6061-T6, 7075-T7351, 2024-T4), titanium alloys (Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5, Grade 2), stainless steels (303, 304, 316L, 17-4 PH), Inconel, and alloy steels. Full material certifications and lot traceability are maintained on all aerospace and defense work.
Can you machine precision parts for medical device enclosures?
Yes. We machine medical device enclosures, surgical instrument housings, and orthopedic implant components from biocompatible alloys including Ti-6Al-4V and 316L stainless steel. Our spring portfolio includes long special springs up to 2,000mm for endoscope coil sheaths and surgical tool actuation.
What CNC machining tolerances can you hold?
We hold tight tolerances on complex geometries using Haas 5-axis machining centers and multi-axis CNC horizontal machining centers. In-house CMM inspection and documented process control support first-article qualification. See our full equipment roster or contact us with your print for application-specific tolerancing discussions.
Do you manufacture custom precision springs for medical and automotive applications?
Yes. Through our TOHOSEIKO partnership, we produce compression, tension, torsion, flat, and wire-form springs to automotive and medical tolerances. Wire diameters from φ0.02mm to φ10mm in stainless steel, titanium, Inconel, and specialty alloys. View spring capabilities →
